For a lot of college students, spring break means Florida
beaches. But a growing number of UB students spend their
vacation cleaning up parks, feeding the hungry, aiding the elderly,
restoring damaged buildings, building homes and assisting with
neighborhood projects.
In 2001, the UB Center for Student Leadership and Community
Engagement sponsored two teams of community workers, one in Buffalo
and the other in New Orleans, where they worked on homes damaged by
Hurricane Katrina.
“Alternative Spring Break is an ideal way to spend
your time off from school,” says Amy Wilson, associate
director of the student leadership center. “Students come
back from break reenergized and fulfilled in a way that a trip to
Mexico could never accomplish.” Generous donors support
Alternative Spring Break with gifts to Student Affairs.
