“Thanks to you, I will teach science to underserved students.”

When a middle-school teacher asked Joe Johnson to tutor a struggling classmate, a teaching career was born. “It was a wonderful feeling to have this teacher show such faith in me and to see my friend succeed because of my help,” recalled Johnson, a Presidential Fellow who said he “certainly could not have attended UB” without the Ralph Theurer Scholarship, which supports a science education student, and the Mary Lou and S. David Farr Scholarship, which supports a student using technology in research. Johnson said his studies introduced him to “working with underserved students in science classrooms, particularly refugees learning English as a second language. I hope to continue along this track.”
