Reaching Others

“Thanks to you, I will help our country prepare for disasters.”

Jared Vega was a freshman “five days into high school” in New York City on September 11, 2000: “I still remember it to this day—it was the worst day of my life,” Vega recalled. The experience helped clarify which professional path he would pursue. The UB accelerated nursing program graduate will complete a UB law degree before beginning a career in community health. “It will allow me to use law and nursing together, in areas like drug regulation, occupational healh and risk management,” he said. “Ultimately, I see myself working for the Department of Labor, Homeland Security or FEMA to better their disaster preparations.” Donations make the difference for students like Vega, who was a Daniel Acker Scholar as a UB undergrad. He said he owes so much to that program because “it makes UB a smaller and much more comfortable place.”
