“Thanks to you, I will train to be a researcher and a doctor of cardiology.”

Emmanuel Effah-Appiah, a native of the small rural village of Juansa in Ghana, West Africa, took the advice of a cousin—a recent UB graduate—and enrolled at UB, where he has earned accolades in the classroom and on the playing fields as a team captain of intramurals soccer.  He took time off from soccer this year to focus on his medical school applications, made more attractive by the awards he has received, including a Mary Rosenblum Somit Scholarship, given to immigrants or first-generation students based on financial need and academic performance. “It is a humbling experience to be recognized for my academic endeavors,” said the dual major—chemistry and biochemistry—who hopes to be a physician-scientist in cardiology.
