“Thanks to you, my patients will be improving long after they've finished physical therapy.”

Derek Smith is a first-class rugby player who has played around the country and in Europe. He started a program in athletic training. But then he watched a physical therapist at work and realized he wanted to help people get better—and stay better. He won this year's Caffiero Scholarship, named for UB physical therapist Alfred T. Caffiero and given to deserving doctoral students. Derek has worked with children, the very old and everyone between. He plans to teach the physical side of good quality of life to every patient. At the end of the day, that could be a lot of good.
