“Thanks to you, I'll be there to protect groundwater from
the effects of hazardous spills.”
David Carlone is studying hydrogeology. When he finishes his
master’s degree and goes to work—his dream job would be
with the United States Geological Survey—he’ll have the
skills to map the consequences of industrial spills, to predict
where they’re going and plan how to clean them up.
He came to UB to study mechanical engineering, but an introductory
geology course—and the pull of working outdoors—turned
him into a geology major. As an undergraduate, he spent the summer
of 2009 in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming, mapping surface geology, an
initiation for future geologists, made possible for David by a
departmental scholarship. He has since won other departmental
grants. Soon, he’ll be a first-responder in hiking boots,
rescuing our most precious resource, thanks to generous donors like
you.
