As a high school junior, Chelsey Reed already was considering a career in medicine when her mother was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)—Lou Gehrig’s disease. The diagnosis set the path Chelsey would follow in the UB Honors College as a double major in biology and Spanish.

A scholarship supported by generous donors helped her continue her research project at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, adding value to her medical school applications. Another scholarship helped with tuition expenses. Her parents kept a promise to Chelsey, who hails from nearby Wheatfield, N.Y.: if she attended UB, they would pay for a study-abroad semester in Madrid. “Those were the best five months of my life,” says Chelsey, who hopes to work as a neurologist doing research on ALS.
