The University Archives houses the historically valuable records
of UB’s academic departments, along with distinguished
collections of faculty papers and archival manuscripts.
The Archives is also home to extensive collections of UB student
publications that document the university’s growth from a
small 19th century medical school to the large, comprehensive
public university that it is today.
Many UB student newspapers, yearbooks and magazines, alumni
periodicals and pamphlets from decades past are now accessible
online in "The Best of the UB Archives." Featured digital
collections include UB student newspapers, the Bee (1921-1950), the
Argus (1947-1950) and the first twelve years of the award-winning
Spectrum (1950-1962).
"The Best of the UB Archives" also includes the first fifteen
years of the Buffalonian yearbook (1934-1948), past issues of the
Opinion, official student newspaper of UB’s Law School
(1949-1987), and periodicals issued by UB’s Black Student
Union beginning in 1970. Each full-text issue in these digital
collections is searchable by keyword, and individual articles may
be easily downloaded and/or printed.
Much of the digitized material was originally issued on
newsprint and is now in extremely fragile condition, the result of
heavy use over the years. A generous grant from the Western New
York Library Resources Council supported the initial digitization
project, but additional funding sources are needed to complete this
initiative. Your contribution to the Archives’ Digitization
Fund will help ensure that all former issues of the Spectrum and
other UB student publications are included in "The Best of the UB
Archives."
