Profiles in Giving

It took him 16 years of studying part time on nights and weekends while working full time and raising a family to complete his engineering degree at UB, but Felix Smist, B.S. ’65, of North Tonawanda, N.Y., kept at it. To honor his father and help students who experience similar situations, Felix’s son James Smist, B.S. ’80, and his wife, Mary, have established the Felix Smist Scholarship at UB with their gift of $30,000.

About the Office of Gift Planning

The Office of Gift Planning at the University at Buffalo is responsible for securing philanthropic support of the University through planned gifts such as bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and lead trusts. In addition, we work with individuals who would like to make gifts of stock, real estate, or tangible assets (such as art work, rare books, stamp or coin collections, etc.). A planned gift often provides the donor with many personal, tax, and estate planning benefits.

Our gift planning staff, which comes to UB from a variety of professional backgrounds, including concentrations in the areas of law and marketing, is pleased to provide information illustrating how a planned gift may help you achieve your own personal and financial planning objectives. The staff provides confidential consultation with benefactors, as well as to their legal and financial advisers. Additionally, the office offers a wide array of other services including seminars on financial, estate, and charitable planning; training programs for staff and the community in charitable giving; and sample gift documents. Furthermore, the office provides a number of important resource s including the Pinnacle newsletter and an extensive array of planned giving brochures to our alumni and friends.

Finally, a major initiative of our office is to communicate information and provide resources to professionals in the Greater Western New York area. Over the years, we have successfully developed our program, our materials, and our ability to solicit, manage, and administer gifts. We would welcome an opportunity to share these resources with you.
