Assistant Vice President for Constituent Development

Description of Position 
The Assistant Vice President for Constituent Development is responsible for implementing a comprehensive fund-raising program that successfully meets University and multiple school/unit goals and contributes to the overall growth of private philanthropy.  The schools/units include the following: 

  • School of Engineering and Applied Sciences       
  • Graduate School of Education       
  • Law School     
  • School of Management       
  • School of Social Work        
  • Division of Athletics 

The duties and assignments include, but are not limited to, working closely with the schools/units, deans, faculties and other University units in articulating and implementing plans, goals and activities related to development efforts.  The Assistant Vice President will provide guidance, mentorship and oversight to development professionals.  The Assistant Vice President will also maintain personal responsibility for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of a group of select prospects.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate as a full member of the university senior development team contributing to overall unit planning and providing fund-raising counsel to senior leadership within the schools/units; respond to the specific requests of the Vice President for Development; 
  • Assist in building a greater awareness of the importance of private philanthropy among campus constituencies and external partners;        
    Assist the Vice President in building a foundation for substantive and enduring growth in private support for the schools/units, and in anticipation of the next comprehensive fund-raising campaign; 
  • Manage fund development professionals; in concert with the Vice President and academic/unit leadership, provide the essential leadership and guidance for major gift officers to maximize productivity:  set performance standards, evaluate performance, implement compensation programs and professional development activities ranging from orientation and training to ongoing mentorship and coaching; 
  • With the Vice President and academic/unit leadership, assist in establishing aggressive, but reasonable fund-raising goals and strategies for achieving and making progress towards those goals;     
  • Work with the Vice President for Development and the Director of Prospect Research and Development to ensure a systematic and coordinated approach to identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gift prospects and donors by staff from all units; conduct regular prospect portfolio reviews with direct reports; work with Corporate and Foundation Relations office to secure support; 
  • Work with the Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations to foster a strong relationship between the fund raising and the alumni relations teams in an effort to promote the best use of unit events and awards; 
  • Participate in the creation and execution of school and unit-based annual appeals in conjunction with the respective development officers and the Director of Annual Programs; 
  • Work with the Director of Development Communications to determine what collateral materials (web, print and e-based) would assist university fund raisers in advancing a program of private philanthropy in the health sciences;  
  • Develop and maintain a personal prospect load of principal and major gift prospects to cultivate, solicit and steward on behalf of the University at Buffalo and the schools/units;          
  • Assume additional responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Vice President for Development. 

Reporting Relationships 

Supervisory:  The Assistant Vice President reports to the Vice President for Development and functions as a member of the leadership team within the unit. The Assistant Vice President directly supervises major gift and development officers within the schools/units.  

Functional: The Assistant Vice President interacts on a regular basis with the Assistant Vice President for Constituent Development–Health Sciences, the Assistant Vice President for Constituent Development—Arts and Sciences, the Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations, the Assistant Vice President for Corporate and Foundation Relations, the Assistant Vice President for Development and Alumni Systems, the Assistant Vice President for Development Services, the Senior Director of Planned Giving, the Director of Development Communications, the Director of Annual Programs, the Director of Prospect Research and Development, and the Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship. The Assistant Vice President will also maintain a working relationship with donors, prospects and key volunteers. 

Qualifications 
Education: A bachelor’s degree is required with an advanced degree preferred. 

Professional 

  • Proven success in securing gifts;       
  • A minimum of six years work as a fund-raising professional, including program planning and personal solicitation with a history of success and increased responsibilities;      
  • Ability to operate and conduct fund raising in a complex environment;          Familiarity with, and success in, the environment of higher education;         Demonstrated ability to relate effectively with internal partners and external volunteers, donors and prospects;         
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, lead and inspire others; ability to facilitate collaboration;      
  • A commitment to development and philanthropy as change agents for the fulfillment of institutional mission and vision. 

Personal Characteristics        

  • Ability to work as part of the university development and alumni relations management team; 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;        
  • Analytical and planning skills; 
  •  A high degree of professionalism and maturity;       
  • Sensitivity to long-term relationship building and stewardship;       
  • Organizational skills/multi-tasking required;       
  • Ability to adapt development models to meet varying needs and conditions.  

Hiring Salary:  $90,000 to $140,000
