One of the nice things about the old campus was the faculty club. It was in the building where the old Norton used to be. Bill Fritten and other advisors and I would usually go to lunch there, and it was nice because it was small enough that a lot of times faculty members from different departments would sit together. Bill was friendly and intelligent so a lot of faculty members used to like to come over and talk to him.
Dr. Joseph Hoffman, from the physics department, was one who liked to have lunch with us. He was fascinating. He had been involved in the making of the atomic bomb. He also had a good sense of humor.
When he was dying he didn't want anyone to know, and he kept that up for a long time. He always said, "I'm fine," though he looked like hell. Somewhere on the Main Street campus there's supposed to be a tree that was planted for him, and I've tried to find this tree, because I really enjoyed him.
