At the turn of the century, medical and pharmacy students who shared a building enjoyed a friendly rivalry with the dental students, who were housed in a separate building. In 1899, the rivalry turned into a three-day brouhaha during which the "meds" and the "pharms" destroyed a state-of-the-art laboratory in the dental building. Students even fell from the second and third stories of the buildings. Miraculously, no one was seriously injured. The faculty took a "boys will be boys" attitude and the brawling was repeated during the next few years. Eventually, the deans quarreled over who should pay damages to their respective buildings and put a stop to the disruptions.
