Open House

by Rose Mary Madejski

UB, and particularly the School of Pharmacy, used to have an open house every year. I think it was 1958, and Syracuse was our archenemy. Right before open house began, some Syracuse students came to UB and painted all kinds of Syracuse slogans and slurs against UB on the huge wooden doors of the South Campus.

One night a close friend of ours, Frank Knox, Jan, my husband-to-be, and I decided that we needed to paint over these doors since the buildings were all defaced with spray paint. We got some paint and the boys brought over ladders. Frank and Jan painted the big doors to Foster Hall, and I was the gofer.

It must have been one o'clock in the morning when suddenly the campus police pulled up and shined their lights on us and yelled, "What are you students doing here?" Since they had just had Syracuse students deface the doors, they were on the look-out. We said, "Tomorrow is open house for UB and the School of Pharmacy and the doors look awful. We're painting over the doors to make them look better." Well, they sat in their police cars and lit up the front of the building so we could finish the job.
