A Man of That Stature

by Betty Bower-Young

When I was a nursing student here in the 1940s, I took Philosophy 101 as an elective. The class was very small, and I remember that the professor was the renowned Dr. Marvin Farber, of the Farber family, as in UB's Farber Hall and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. There were only 30 students in that class. Dr. Farber was a brilliant speaker and teacher.

After earning my degree here, I continued my education at UC-Berkeley, where my classes, with distinguished professors or not, consisted of about a thousand students in each class. Contrasting the class size between the two schools, and also the access we had to such a great teacher who took the time to teach a basic class, I realized the value of my UB education.
