Devoted to UB

Emeritus SUNY Distinguished Service Professor Peter Hare is devoted to UB and to the Department of Philosophy. “I strongly identify with the university and with this department, which has been very good to me,” said Hare, on why he has given the university $1 million. He retired in 2001.

Hare said that he and his late wife, Daphne Hare, M.D. – a former UB faculty member and director of the Medical/Dental Division of the Veterans Administration Center Office in Washington, DC, who died in 1995 – shared a dream of helping UB become all that it could be. With this gift, he is able to benefit the university while also honoring his wife, whom he considered the other half of his personal team.

Hare split his gift so that half funds the Charles S. Peirce Professorship in honor of the founder of American pragmatism. He has complemented the endowed professorship with a general fund for the philosophy department – the Peter and Daphne Hare Fund – that will help with ongoing departmental needs, including some often-neglected areas such as service awards for staff members and teaching excellence awards for graduate students.
