I was a high school football coach for 38 years. I coached at Williamsville and Niagara-Wheatfield. I was in a league one time that had 500 boys and we played against these schools that had 1000, 1200 kids, so I know just what UB football is going through today. It's a tough road.
Coach Cirbus is an honest and hardworking man, and UB football is going to come along, but it takes time. You know, if you go out and recruit some bums that are good football players, you might start off pretty well. But if you get good quality kids, it's still going to come about. It just takes time to build a program.
When I was at UB, Coach Dick Offenhamer was tough. A number of the guys who played for him all became high school coaches. Of our team of 1958, a team of about 50 guys, I bet 35 of them became high school coaches, and all of them have been really successful. There are a lot of things attributed to Coach Offenhamer. He ingrained a lot of good things in us, especially a work ethic.
