This Tremendous Voice

by Charles Tirone

I'll tell you one about football in the '50s that maybe people don't know. On this team, we had a guy named Herb Pordum. He was one of the ballplayers, and he had a voice.

It wasn't just a good voice. It was a professional voice. It was an opera voice.

Everybody sings in the shower. Everybody thinks they can sing while they're in the shower. But Herb would sing, "I'll Never Walk Alone," or he would sing Italian opera - I Pagliacci. Everybody would come down and look into our shower, because he had this tremendous voice.

I heard later that as an adult, Herb was doing local opera where he lived. Everybody remembered him. He was something.
