It took him 16 years of studying part time on nights and weekends while working full time and raising a family to complete his engineering degree at UB, but Felix Smist, B.S. ’65, of North Tonawanda, N.Y., kept at it. To honor his father and help students who experience similar situations, Felix’s son James Smist, B.S. ’80, and his wife, Mary, have established the Felix Smist Scholarship at UB with their gift of $30,000.

A Lot of Good Coaches

by Ed Michael

I remember when we dropped Division I Football in 1970. I'd only been on campus four of five months, and that was a very sad day. We had an outstanding coaching staff at that time - many of them went on to coach major college football at other institutions, and some of them even ended up coaching at the professional level.

One that stands out in my mind is Jim McNally. I believe Jim is now with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He's either with them or with the Carolina Panthers. I know that Jim was also with Green Bay for a time, and he did a long stint with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Rick Lantz, who was on that staff, I saw him a couple years ago on the sidelines when Virginia was playing Miami Florida - he's their defensive coordinator.

Bob Deming, of course, went on to coach at Colgate and later became the athletic director at Ithaca College, who had a wonderful Division III program under Bob's direction.

We've had a lot of good coaches who have come through here for whatever reason.
