Milton in the Locker Room

by Walter Simpson

I never knew Milton Plesur as one of his students. I never met him on campus, despite each of us having long associations with the university. And I never saw Milton with his clothes on!

I met Milton and regularly encountered him when we were both in the locker room of the Amherst Jewish Center. I went there to exercise. Milton's idea of a workout was lying naked on the massage table in the locker room, reading the newspaper and conversing with those who passed through.

Milton knew who I was and, as I was changing, would always chide me about energy waste on campus. I enjoyed his sense of humor. I appreciated his much-evident personal decency. I thought what a treat it must have been to have him as a teacher.
