Profiles in Giving

It took him 16 years of studying part time on nights and weekends while working full time and raising a family to complete his engineering degree at UB, but Felix Smist, B.S. ’65, of North Tonawanda, N.Y., kept at it. To honor his father and help students who experience similar situations, Felix’s son James Smist, B.S. ’80, and his wife, Mary, have established the Felix Smist Scholarship at UB with their gift of $30,000.

Why should you support UB?

How can the university expect you to make private contributions on top of all that you already do? You support the university on the job, every day, in classrooms, labs, offices and throughout campus.

Why? Because directly or indirectly, you benefit. You have seen how generous donations can build a new lab, improve the space for student activities, wire a classroom or help with a conference.  You have enjoyed the diversity of students and faculty that private gifts provide. You have cheered for student athletes and applauded the graduates taking their place as leaders in the world. You know better than most the difference between a “state-assisted” and a “state-supported” university.

Support from faculty and staff sends an important message to alumni and friends who want proof that UB is worthy of their support.

You may also support UB through UB Believers, a dedicated group of Western New Yorkers from all walks of life.  As part of this broad-based advocacy group, they share a belief that a strong UB will lead to a brighter future for all of Buffalo Niagara.
